Hilary Duff says life sometimes “sucks” as a divorced single mom.
The 29-year-old actress said in the April issue of Redbook that she’s learned to parent Luca, her 4-year-old son with ex-husband Mike Comrie, on her own.
“Some of my friends tell me, ‘God, it must be so nice, you get a break from your kid because you share him.’ I’m divorced, and it sucks. Well, it did suck for a while; now it’s just normal,” Duff told the magazine.
“But it’s true, I do get a break,” she qualified. “I had Luca by myself for a few weeks, no help, when Mike was on the road, and when he got home I was like, ‘He’s yours! Bye!'”
Duff split from Comrie in 2014 after more than three years of marriage, and finalized her divorce in February 2016. She confessed she often experiences feelings of guilt as she struggles to balance motherhood and her career.
“I always feel torn or guilty about something. I’m not working right now, and at first I stressed about that, like, ‘Oh, I shouldn’t stay still this long.’ And that’s ridiculous,” the star asserted.
“I have a child; it’s totally fine to not be slammed all the time. It feels really good to not be on someone else’s schedule — besides Luca’s. I’m basically his chauffeur!” she said.
Duff defended herself against mom-shamers in December after sharing a photo on Instagram of herself kissing Luca on the lips. Some social media users deemed the display of affection “inappropriate” and “wrong.”
“For anyone commenting that a kiss on the lips with my four-year-old is ‘inappropriate’ go ahead and click unfollow with your warped minds and judgment,” the actress responded.
Duff plays Kelsey Peters on the TV Land series Younger, which was renewed for a fourth season in June. She made her red carpet debut with new boyfriend Matthew Koma at the Entertainment Weekly pre-Screen Actors Guild Awards party in January.
