Barcelona-Valencia: Messi nets brace to keep close with Real Madrid

Barcelona earned a hard-fought 4-2 win over a 10-man Valencia on Sunday to keep the pressure on first-place Real Madrid in La Liga standings.

Barca, trailing the league leaders by five points entering the day, got two goals from Lionel Messi, one from Luis Suarez and one from Andre Gomes to secure the three points.

After Eliaquim Mangala put Valencia in the lead midway through the first half with a terrific header, Barca responded quickly.

Neymar used his hands to set up Suarez’s opener 35 minutes in.

Then Suarez went down in the box and was given a penalty kick, which saw Mangala sent off, and Messi hit right down the middle just before the break.

Valencia then got a goal just seconds later from Munir to make it 2-2, but Barca was too much in the second half.

Messi scored Barca’s third with a fine finish with his right foot on 52 minutes.

And Gomes finished it off late on the counter.

The win sees Barca move to 63 points, two behind Real Madrid with one more match played. The Catalan club will return to action on April 2 against Granada after the international break.
